A survey of the Commonwealth was commissioned by the governor in 1830 in order to prepare an accurate map of Massachusetts. The trigonometrical phase of the survey was put in charge of Simeon Borden in 1834 and he was required to keep this daily journal of work, to be submitted quarterly to the governor (Resolves 1834, c 73).
